Wildfire protection & Citizen awareness

Giving a day of my summer to the forest” is an environmental project concerning wildfire protection and is running every summer since 2007 between June and September.

It organizes the close observation of the forests of Mount Olympus in two daily shifts (10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.) to detect and counteract possible threats of spreading fire.

For this purpose, the overview of a strategically placed observation tower is used, which is located on the beach and provides good sight. The cooperating local fire brigade is informed by telephone at the start and end of each shift and noticed immediately whenever something suspicious is discovered.

The shifts are managed via a digital platform, where volunteers from the local community can register by name for one or more shifts. The platform is also managed and maintained by volunteers.

This way, every year hundreds of local volunteers participate and prevent spreading fire by reporting up to 20 sightings.
